GANAGOBIE is a small village in the south of France on the Napoleon road, so called when Napoleon took this road to the conquest of Spain.
In the very old provencal language, 'Ganagobie'means 'BIG FISH', refering to the flying fish of the river Durance. Unfortunately there are no more fish to be found in this river today. When the first 'GANAGOBIE' flew in 1953, the then young Lobet brothers, William and James, were very impatient to fly, and after a while they realized their aircraft had no name. Someone then suggested the name of 'GANAGOBIE' as the brothers had flown several times at the internationaly famous St Auban gliding center only a few kilometers away from the GANAGOBIE village.
Today ' GANAGOBIE' village is a tourist attraction because of its famous ancient Monastery.
Established in an unique site, on a tableland overlooking the Durance valley, halfway between Forcalquier and Sisteron. Within reach: Le Prieure de Ganagobie is in the Haute-Provence (04), North-East of Forcalquier, between Lurs and Peyruis. To have access by the small road D.30, from the N.96 at 6km south of Peyruis. Map Michelin 81, pli 16 at the center. The Monastery of Ganagobie is a Carolingian foundation, but the buildings that are still standing are all of the Romanesque period. Founded about the middle of the 10th century by the Bishop of Sisteron. The Ganagobie village of course benefits from this historic tourist spot.
Those interested in Provencal romane Architecture, can obtain a small book of 60. pages, with 30 photos of the Ganagobie Monastery in French, English and German, see link below:.
