The following is a letter from RON BALLOU, who installed a Continental A40 in his very beautiful 'GANAGOBIE' depicted on the back cover of SPORT AVIATION MARCH '70.
A short line to let you know how the GANAGOBIE is doing. I completed the required 50 hours test period in September and received the annual licence. Had a lot of fun during the summer but now the Oregon winter weather ( rain) has slowed down the flying. I flew the airplane last week in 25 knot winds and experienced no difficulties. I have built and installed a larger ( chord ) stabilizer ( now incorporated into the plans) as I wanted to lower the leading edge down to the original plan location. I have flown till now with a fixed tab on the elevator. The new location is just a bit low but nearer to being streamlined with the elevator than before. It will require a small tab trimmed nose down now.
Stalls are clean with little warning but it seems to hang on at a very low speed, just below 40 on my A. S. which is the first number on my dial. The instrument seems to read on the high side ( 80mph while cruising with a 75 HP J-3 Cub?).
The balance problem ( with the 40 HP Continental ) was solved by moving the firewall to bulkhead N 2 location and using a typical motor mount. The overall length remains about the same as shown on the plans and the leg room is no problem as I am 6'4" tall. This airplane fits me better than many factory types: however I do receive a few comments from viewers as I curl in or uncoil at strange airports.
I have praise for the designer of the landing gear. This thing rolls out like a tri-gear. One other person has flown the airplane and he liked the way it flew "Just like any other airplane".
The climb rate isn't real great, but how many 40HP planes do climb fast? Modifications other than the firewall location, the fin was enlarged slightly during construction, the lower forward point being moved forward to the bulkhead just forward of the plan location.
Metal leading edge was used on wings (025) and intermediate nose ribs deleted; fibreglass tanks were made, the spars were unnecessarily enlarged. The empty weight is 515 pounds ( heavy aint it!). The CG is at 18% of the chord.
I fly from a tower controlled airport and use a Skyways radio.
No brakes were installed so caution is used while taxiing on paved surfaces. No problem on the grass strips. The propeller was carved down from a Hegy originally used on a 2 cylinder AERONCA engine so pitch is unknown.
Diameter is 65", I have flown the plane once with a 68" Pro, built for the 40 HP Cub. The pitch was much too flat.
Well back to the garage, I have another project under way, bigger and faster for cross country.
